The Early Career Researchers (ECR) Representatives serve as a point of contact for doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers and other early career scientific staff at ZMT. They are available to discuss concerns, receive suggestions and support initiatives aimed at improving the professional and working environment for ECRs.
This joint structure enables early career researchers at different career stages to exchange experiences, work together and ensure that their perspectives are represented within ZMT. The group includes members from different programme areas and working groups.
The ECR Representatives organise and support activities that promote exchange, networking and professional development. These may include regular gatherings, workshops, social activities and collaborations with other research networks and institutions and the ECR community at ZMT.
The ECR Representatives group consists of eight early career researchers from different programme areas and working groups. Three members act as the main contact persons and official representatives. However, all members of the extended representative team are actively involved and equally available to engage with you.

Current ECR Activities
Arriving well: Onboarding for new ECRs, with attention to what relocating to Bremen from abroad actually involves.
Moving on: Off-boarding support and an alumni network, so that leaving ZMT, whether for academia or beyond, is a supported transition rather than an abrupt one.
Working conditions: An ECR survey to document how PhDs and postdocs here experience their positions, so that the issues we raise are backed by evidence rather than anecdote. If you are/were an ECR at ZMT and haven’t filled in the survey yet, we’d appreciate your feedback.
Connections within ZMT: We’re organizing events to get connected and exchange with other peers at ZMT.
Connections beyond ZMT: The Leibniz PostDoc Network and N², other marine research institutions in Bremen, and contacts with NGOs, agencies and companies.
Making support visible: A single overview of the support already available to PhDs and PostDocs at ZMT, because much of it is easy to miss.
